Agi left us about 9 p.m. Friday 21 January 2000. We were alone in her house, Carollee Shea and I. Agi was in her bed and had asked to see a TV tape of her grandchildren, Alex and Katie. We found a tape a decade old and we all watched the kids reading aloud and cavorting in sweet ways. Agi loved what she was watching. Ms. Shea and I left Agi with her glorious grandchildren and withdrew to Agi's favorite reading place overlooking her pool. I looked in from time to time to check on her. At about 9 p.m. Agi was still, and her breathing seemed to have stopped. I rushed in to Ms. Shea who is a registered nurse to confirm what I had seen, and after examining her, she said: "yes, she's gone."
Agi died at peace with the world. As we all knew, she had wanted desperately to leave us the quicker the better, and she got her wish, without assistance from anyone.
Agi had said goodbye to Peter who had a pressing business trip to Austin, Texas. And to Paul who caught a 6 p.m. plane to Monterey that day, after spending three continuous hard weeks waiting on Agi every moment, taking her to radiation therapy, feeding her, etc. Alone, with Peter's children on TV, it seemed that her time had come.
