FISCHMANN Marcel (Marci)

Marci's Story
an interview with Marcel's sister-in-law, Yoli
Fischman |
| When Marcel was 19, he was one of 500 people
who answered an advertisement for a position in a big rug factory
in Begezchopa. The director of the factory hired him and put him
in an office where his daughter also worked, hoping the two would
fall in love and marry. But Marci was already in love with an
older woman. She worked at an important job at the mayor's office
in city of Békescsaba, but she lost her job because she was
Jewish and communist. She then got a good job in a famous office
in Budapest in commercial trade. Marcel's father and older
brother Adi were very upset and dead set against the marriage
because she was so much older and had no dowry. But Adi's wife Yoli said, "why not? she's educated." But Samuel
sneered, "what do you care, you're only an in-law."
Marcel didn't know what to do and even consulted a psychiatrist
(who had some theory about Marcel being born while his mother was
dying). One night, Adi and their father Samuel called Marcel over
to have it out with him and talk him out of the marriage. But
when he arrived, he wanted to know where was Yoli. Yoli had gone to
bed. Marcel said fine, "I'll come back tomorrow since she's
the only one I want to talk to." He came back the next day
and talked with Yoli until 3 in the morning. He did marry Margit
who moved back to Békescsaba (where her parents also lived).
They had two children and were all taken to the camps and
probably died.* Perhaps she survived an lived on as a communist
because of her connections. [3]
* According to the 1944 records of the Kosice Train Station
Military Command, a death train of 3118 people left Békescsaba
on 27.6.1944 [http://www.kosice.sk/history/zidovsky/vlaksmrti.htm]
