Agi's Story
(extract from mom's memoirs) |
 |
All
the Breuer girls were attractive, vivacious and capable but they shared
the handicap of not having a dowry. Back in that era, this was a
tremendous obstacle in achieving a good
marriage. If they
wanted to marry a businessman or a professional of some respectful note,
a dowry was expected. I
feel for the three girls; Julia, Kato and Boske (Elizabeth) because none
of the three married for love. The
oldest, Julia, married an upholsterer in Milan.
He was a good-hearted man but uneducated and he had to work very
hard just to eke out a decent living.
Eventually they ended up in Los Angeles and were very decent to
my family when we arrived as refugees.
|
| [Just after Agi arrived in Los Angeles
after fleeing Hungary in '56 revolution] We had
an Aunt Julia, my father’s sister--the one kicked out of Barcelona by
Franco,--living in Los Angeles and she was about to receive the surprise
of her life. I called her
and we talked for about five minutes, Aunt Julia still under the
impression that I was calling from Hungary.
But when she realized we
were in Los Angeles, she
was so excited to have her very own Hungarian refugees
that she and her husband rushed over in the middle of the night
to see us. |
Note: Jutka & her sister Kato sewed lingerie in
Debrecen. Jutka moved to Milan, Italy (where her brother Erno lived) in the mid 1930's to find a husband (being a
Jew without a dowery). She had a finance who she dumped when she caught him necking in the park with her brothers' wife. When the Fascists insisted the Jews be deported, Jutka moved to Barcelona Spain ('38 or '39) where she was later joined by her sister Erzebet (also looking for a husband). Jutka married John Hutter (a good man but not as educated as she was, but more importantly a gentile). In '44, Jukta &
Erzsebet moved to Toronto (because of more difficulties with the Franco's Fascists). She moved to Los Angeles because she didn't care for the
climate.[2][3]
