Forced Labor from Ujfeherto
Information on forced labor from Buczko's book, The Jews of Ujfeherto, based on an interview with a former Ujfeherto Jewish resident:
"On March 11, 1939 a new military law established "obligatory work duty" of Jews and other non-trustable residents. The law said all Jewish men between 17-70. After Dec 18, 1941 they could no longer wear military uniform, only their own clothes. During winter the army would not supply them warmer clothing. They had to get it themselves. From spring 1942 they were taken to the Russian front in Ukraine. The first Hungarian troops and laborers were sent to the Eastern Front on April 11, 50,000 workers with 250,000 regular soldiers. The forced laborers built rail lines, shoveled snow, pulled the cannons when the horses died, strung barbed wires, built bunkers and tank traps and picked up dangerous ammunitions. Around July 10 these forces were around the Don River.. According to the interview no one returned from forced labor in Ujfeherto"
