* Ignatz was a grain merchant since 1925. His
father (Samuel) was a farmer. Had own business since 1903,
formerly dealt in sacks and had a mill.[5] Ignac KATZ was the business partner of
Ferenc BREUER and owned the mill with him.[4] They were also next door neighbors of Ferenc
BREUER.[2] Land owner[6].
** In
discussing Aunt Kato's claim that Erno (or Endre) was a "rablovezer"
(sp?), my friend Isaac Katz (10/6/07) had this to add: "If so, than
Andor (Endre) Katz must have been Ignatz's son who committed suicide. I think I
told you the story that he was stealing from his father who was a corn dealer
and used the money for his own pleasures. May be this is the story that you late
mother's aunt Kato remembered and was trying to tell.
*** Aunt
Kato tells a story about a Bela who mistreated other Jews in Auschwitz (perhaps
he was a Kapu) and was killed by the other Jews before he could return home when
Auschwitz was freed. At first I thought she meant that Ignatz had another
son named Bela, but if so he is not mentioned in the Ujfeherto civil
records. But Ignatz's did have a son-in-law named Bela. His daughter
Illona married Bela Grunberer so perhaps this is who she meant. Kato's
story is grabbled and cannot be considered entirely reliable: "BREUER
Isador lived in Tokaj. I was there almost every summer. You
know the beach queen. I was a queen there. KATZ BREUER Isador.
The name is Ilona, daughter. Bela, you know they came, he was the one that
came back from Auschwitz on the way home because he was bad. KATZ BREUER
Isador. He had 3 children and Bela was a lawyer. That was the
story. I am not sure. They were in Auschwitz [he was] bad to the
other Jewish people. That's what they are talking about. Isador's
son Bela. I'm not sure, they said they killed him because he was bad to
the other Jewish people. [Bela died in Auschwitz.] "
Note: KATZ Samuel was the godfather of BREUER Karoly's son Samuel.
The KATZ family of
Újfehértó is related to the LEITNER family.
