GRUNBAUM Family

Origin of Name

GRUNBAUM is a common Jewish name. It may be a variant of GREENBAUM.  The GRUNBAUM's lived in Ujfeherto, Hungary or possible nearby Balkany or Bokony.  They are somehow connected to a larger GRUNBAUM family from Hadjunanas.  I have also heard of another GRUNBAUM family in Teglas.

Religion

The GRUNBAUMs were Jewish. My mother Agi described her grandmother Amalia GRUNBAUM as one of the most spiritual persons she had ever met.  According to my Aunt Kato, Mali GRUNBAUM kept a kosher home.

Oldest Ancestor

Currently, the GRUNBAUM Tree traces back to my great, great grandfather Matyas GRUNBAUM*, who died in Ujfeherto in 1885 at the age of 40[1]

Matyas GRUNBAUM was married to Debora Julianna BRUDER and had 8 children. Matyas must have been a wealthy man. Matyas died in 1885 apparently leaving "steam and mechanical mill(s)" to his widow[2].  Half ownership of one of the mills changed hands to their son-in-law Ferenc BREUER when he married Amalia GRUNBAM shortly after the widow of Matyas' death.

Children of Matyas GRUNBAUM

Records show that Matyas GRUNBAUM and Debora BRUDER had 8 children:

(1) Abraham Jakob GRUNBAUM (1863), farmer, land owner

(2) Antal GRUNBAUM (1867)

(3) Johana Jetti GRUNBAUM (1867), Mrs. Herman KLEIN

(4) Laura Sari GRUNBAUM (1870), Mrs. Elias KLEIN, farm steward, butcher

(5) Ignacz GRUNBAUM (1873) had 4 children of which only 1 returned from Russia.

(6) Amalia GRUNBAUM (1877), Mrs. Ferencz BREUER, my great grandfather

(7) Herman GRUNBAUM, shoemaker, Ujfeherto

Sources

My GRUNBAUM Tree is an extension of the original GRUNBAUM Family Tree created by my cousin Frank Banyai which was based on  the Újfehértó Jewish birth/marriage/death temple registry 1852-1895 (LDS FHC Film).  These were enhanced by a chart provided by the Jabab Grunbaum family line in Hungary.  Recently, a new source, the post 1895 Ujfeherto Civil Registration obtained for me by a researcher form the Niregyhaza Archives has increased our knowledge at the turn of the 20 century.  Other important sources of great family historical value are the memoirs and photo album of my mother Agi Linhardt and interviews with her Aunt Kato Rosza.

* The 1828 census provides two different possibilities for Matyas' parents: (1) Ignatz (1814) and Rosalia (1810) GRUNBAUM mentioned of Balkany (children: Joseph (1830), Matyas & Lebi (1838) and Korolina (1836)). Or (2) Itzak GRUNBAUM (35) and Julianna JUDAS (30) of Bokony mentioned in the 1848 census of Szabolcs county (children: Matyas (10), Ezster (9), Mozses (6) and Mari (4)). There is supporting evidence that Matyas of Ujfeherto could be the same person listed in either the Balkany or Bokony census entry. Matyas of Ujfeherto did have a relative named Moses who witnessed the birth of his son Antal in 1866. There are also entries for a Lebi GRUNBAUM in Ujfeherto.
